Inquiry and Evaluation
Evaluation
The following excerpt is taken from the evaluation criteria for Level I Inquiry (HTH SCI 1E06). Alternate forms of evaluation are used for further Inquiry courses in the program.
There are many forms of evaluation which will employ as required but at some point this will be translated to a mark or grade using the following scheme:
A grade of:
A ... has attained a high level of competency in all of the stated skill areas. This would be recognizable by any facilitator and the peer group.
B ... has attained a high level of competency in most (but not all) of the stated skill areas or has attained moderate competency in all of the skill areas. The student will have developed a plan of action for further development in those areas which require more development.
C ... has attained a moderate level of competency in some of the skill stated areas or has attained a low level of competency in all of the skill areas. The student will recognize the deficiencies or concerns and will have discussed a plan to deal with the concerns during their university career.
You may ask yourself, "Hmmm... what exactly is the evidence of competency which would be evaluated as A, B or C?" The evidence will develop as a consequence of your involvement with many tools. The exact tools may vary a little with different groups but we have consistent expectations. The tools will include the development and utilization of criteria which will be used to evaluate oneself, your peers and the scientific literature. It will include group work, scholarly writing, presentations, discussions and debates. You will be given every opportunity to participate in a variety of formats and to work on those skills that need the most attention.
The evaluation doesn't stop there...
There is a self-evaluation form that can be submitted online. This simple form is to see how you have progressed, as well as, what you need to improve. For example, it might look a little something like this:
In the context of the course goals and objectives:
- How have you been successful thus far?
- In what skill areas do you need to improve?
- What might we help you with?
- How are you doing in your other courses?
