946 I — Applied Behavioural Analysis and Therapy, Level I (12 weeks)
Content:
Introduction to learning and conditioning principles: respondent conditioning, operant conditioning, social learning theory and cognitive psychology upon which behavioural and cognitive behavioural assessment, formulation and therapy are based. Introduction to basic assessment and formulation skills.
Objectives:
- To understand basic principles of operant and respondent conditioning, social learning theory and cognitive psychology.
- To acquire a basic understanding of selecting relevant target behaviours and collecting information required to complete behavioural formulations.
- To become familiar with data gathering strategies including behavioural checklists and questionnaires, direct observations and analogue assessments.
Format:
Assigned readings, discussion, group problem solving exercises.
Evaluation:
Evaluation is based on weekly participation in group discussion of key concepts and quizzes.
946 II — Applied Behavioural Analysis and Therapy, Level II (12 weeks)
Criteria for Admission:
Successful completion of Applied Behavioural Analysis and Therapy Level I and continued work in a setting in which behavioural assessment and therapy techniques are applicable and/or routinely applied.
Content:
Introduction to the basic principles and techniques of Applied Behavioural Analysis and Behaviour Therapy as applied to various clinical populations, including for example, autism spectrum disorder, developmental disability and acquired brain injury.
Objectives:
- Develop an understanding of the relationship between behavioural formulation and behavioural programming.
- Acquire knowledge of basic behavioural strategies.
- Develop an understanding of the range of problems to which behavioural strategies can be applied.
Format:
Assigned readings, discussion, group problem solving exercises and individual projects.
Evaluation:
Evaluation is based on weekly participation in group discussions of key concepts and quizzes.
946 III— Applied Behavioural Analysis and Therapy, Level III (20 weeks)
Criteria for Admission:
Satisfactory completion of Applied Behavioural Analysis and Therapy Levels I and II or Behavioural Analysis Levels I and II. Only those students who are actively involved in settings where behavioural techniques are routinely and primarily used will be eligible for Level III. Entry into Level III and individual objectives must be negotiated with and approved by the Studies Area Chair and the faculty tutor to whom the student has been assigned.
General Content:
Level III content is negotiated based on faculty and student interest. Content areas may include, but are not limited to, Applied Behavioural Analysis (ABA) in autism spectrum disorder, ABA in developmental disability, ABA in brain injury rehabilitation.
