Cognitive Behaviour Therapy for Anxiety & Mood Disorders
913 I— Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Level I, (12 weeks)- Waiting List
Admission:
This course is designed for students who are experienced clinical therapists.
Content:
Review of paradigms underlying anxiety and mood disorders. Review of behavioural and cognitive procedures and techniques applied to anxiety and mood disorders in adults.
Objectives:
The student will: acquire the basic knowledge and skill that will prepare them to train as an independent cognitive behavioural clinician.
- Describe basic learning and behavioural change principles.
- Describe basic methods in a cognitive behavioural assessment.
- Develop cognitive behavioural formulations. The formulation using cognitive and behavioural concepts will guide a treatment plan.
- Develop the ability to generalize these skills.
Format:
Combination of didactic and small group, interactive, problem-based learning. Instruction, modeling, role-playing, video material, and feedback. Self-monitoring of skill acquisition. Weekly readings.
- 1.5 to 2 hours Presenter (the presentation to include didactic presentation and/or case presentation)
- 1 hour 45 minutes application (tutor)
Evaluation:
Self-evaluation, participating in group discussion, problem solving, multiple choice questions and written formulations.
913 II — Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Level II, (12-16 weeks) - Waiting List, Admission Based on Eligibilty
Criteria for Admission:
Satisfactory completion of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Level I and assessment of eligibility is required. This course is designed for students who are experienced clinical therapists but who need more exposure to CBT prior to Level III.
Content:
Participation in cognitive behavioural group or individual therapy for 12-16 weeks. The student will participate as a co-therapist and will be able to observe and apply cognitive behavioural therapy skills.Objectives:
The student will:
- Become more familiar with CBT interventions.
- Learn to apply CBT skills under direct supervision.
- Directly observe an experienced cognitive therapist.
- Acquire and be able to apply basic cognitive behavioural skills.
Format:
Direct observation, modeling feedback, reading.
Evaluation:
Verbal feedback, discussion, Cognitive Therapy Scale for disorder specific interventions (optional).
913 III— Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Level III (Minimum 20 weeks) - Waiting List
Criteria for Admission:
Satisfactory completion of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy Levels I and II. This course is designed for students who are experienced clinical therapists. Students must have their own clients, two cases, 10 weeks each, (consecutively) and bring in their own case material.
Content:
Individually tutored application of Level I knowledge and skills, plus introduction of more specialized concepts and methods for the particular disorder that is the focus chosen by the student. Level III will focus on only one disorder, but may be repeated so that skills in applying CBT with other disorders can be acquired. The student will be tutored on two cases.
The disorders addressed include:
- Depression – children, adolescence, geriatric
- Anxiety disorders (adults) – social phobia, OCD, panic, GAD, specific phobia
- Bipolar
Objectives:
The student will:
- Develop the ability to function as a “personal scientist” in the clinician role.
- Acquire and apply conceptual knowledge specific to the cognitive behavioural formulation of the disorder to be addressed (depression or specific anxiety disorder).
- Acquire and apply cognitive behavioural assessment and intervention skills specific to the disorder being addressed.
Acquire an understanding of the process and methods of problem identification, assessment, selection of treatment, repeated formulation, and hypothesis testing.
