Interpersonal Psychotherapy of Depression III

965- Interpersonal Psychotherapy of Depression, Level III, 20 Weeks

Criteria for Admission:

Satisfactory completion of Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Levels I and II.  Students must have at least 2 clinical cases so there is ongoing supervision for 16 weeks.

Fast Track Option:

Students may enter IPT without completing Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Levels I and II provided that they have a minimum of:  a bachelor’s degree and one year of supervised psychotherapy experience and a firm grasp of psychodynamic psychotherapy principles and techniques.  Students applying for this option may be requested to complete an examination and/or to be interviewed by the IPT Course Coordinator.

Content:

Interpersonal Psychotherapy of Depression (IPT) is a short term, contractual, "here and now" focused psychotherapy.  IPT has two main goals:  1) the relief of depressive symptoms and 2) the individual’s adaptation to the social and interpersonal circumstances associated with the onset of the depression.

This psychotherapy focuses on the resolution of social and interpersonal problems that would be associated with mood problems.  The emphasis of IPT is to facilitate restoration of the client’s previous level of functioning.

Objectives:

The IPT course will expose students to the IPT model, and the methods and techniques used for conducting individual IPT sessions. 


The student’s objectives are:

  • To develop an understanding of the IPT model, methods and techniques.
  • To apply the IPT model to case material and develop the ability to conduct IPT sessions.

Format:

  • Participation in four IPT seminars focusing on:  the IPT model, methods and techniques, applications to other modalities and special problems, and critical review of IPT research.
  • Completion of at least two to three IPT cases with 16 weeks of supervision to include audio or, if possible audiovisual tapes of student’s sessions.

Evaluation:

  • IPT Seminars – demonstrated understanding of the IPT approach through seminar participation and indicated by the IPT Seminar Students Participation Evaluation Form completed by the IPT seminars presenter.  Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback by completing the IPT Psychotherapy Supervision Presentation Evaluation Form.
  • IPT Psychotherapy – completion of a minimum of two to three cases with at least 16 hours of IPT psychotherapy.  Demonstrated progress on the application of the IPT approach indicated by the IPT Psychotherapy Evaluation Form completed by the IPT supervisor.  Students will have the opportunity to provide feedback by completing the IPT Psychotherapy Supervision Evaluation Form.
