971 - I Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – Level 1 (12 weeks)
Admission Criteria:
Satisfactory completion of CBT Level I, II, III or equivalent experience. This course is designed for students who are experienced clinical therapists. Pre-screening by the study area chair will be conducted.
Content:
Review of cognitive behavioural formulations of posttraumatic stress disorders. In-depth learning of Prolonged Exposure (PE) treatment protocol for single incident traumas resulting in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults.
Objectives:
The student will:
- Acquire knowledge and skills that will prepare them to train in an applied setting in the delivery of Prolonged Exposure for PTSD.
- Describe the cognitive behavioural formulation of the etiology and maintenance of PTSD.
- Describe and use various assessment tools in the differential diagnosis of PTSD.
- Develop and implement (through role play and other forms of practice), a 12-session treatment plan based on Prolonged Exposure for single-incident traumas.
- Develop an initial understanding of the differences between single-incident and complex traumas.
Format:
Combination of didactic and small group, interactive, problem-based learning. Sessions will include case presentations, instruction, modeling, role-playing, video material, and feedback. Weekly readings will be assigned to illustrate relevant concepts.
- 2 hours: presentation (including didactic information, case material, modeling of skills)
- 1 hour: application (based on case material, apply the skills acquired in the session through the use of role play and group brainstorming)
Evaluation:
Self-evaluation, participating in the group discussion, problem solving, multiple choice questions and written formulations (e.g., case conceptualizations, hierarchy development, etc.).
971 II - Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – Level 2 (12 weeks)
Criteria for admission:
Satisfactory completion of PTSD Level 1.
