The Janice Pogue Lecture

Janice PogueJanice Pogue was an exceptional statistician who created the statistical group at the Population Health Research Institute (PHRI) where she worked for 22 years, and as a faculty member in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics (CE&B). She was highly respected and admired by colleagues and much loved by graduate students. Janice was a role model for research staff, faculty colleagues and students in CE&B, the PHRI, and in many other organizations throughout the world. Her untimely death in 2016 was a major loss for the PHRI, McMaster University, and the international biostatistics / clinical trials research community. Recognizing the importance of her contributions to the field, and to establish a lasting memorial in her name, PHRI and CE&B are launching an annual Janice Pogue Lecture to continue the many important dialogues that Janice began and to honour her dedication to clinical research and her generosity to her colleagues.

The lectureship will be held annually at PHRI and McMaster University, and the awardee will have demonstrated excellence in the areas of biostatistics, research methodology in clinical trials and population research. It will be awarded to an individual from within Canada or abroad who:

  1. Is conducting research in a statistical area that challenges existing methods or accepted ideas in health research, and has demonstrated a sustained record of publications.
  2. Holds a faculty appointment at a recognized university and is distinguished by his/her mentorship and development of research staff and students.
  3. Is capable of delivering a high-quality lecture that will be of interest to a multi-disciplinary audience of health researchers and decision-makers.
