About Us

Celebrating 25 years ... 1987 - 2012
The Program for Faculty Development (PFD) in the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University is committed to providing our inter-professional faculty and residents with leadership, expertise and support to assist in their roles relevant to their responsibilities in health sciences education, research, academic clinical care, and administration. The principle goal of the PFD is to build and sustain capacity in the area of health sciences education by:
- Preparing faculty for professional and inter-professional roles
- Supporting faculty at all stages of career, to grow and fulfill their faculty roles
- Developing and facilitating educational leaders and leadership
- Promoting academic scholarship, life-long learning, and curricular renewal
- Celebrating and Recognizing faculty achievement, excellence, innovation and collaboration
The PFD has undertaken a change in direction and focus to move past simple exposure level learning programs to offerings that allow faculty to move to greater depth of learning and integration. Pathways for achievement have been established to allow faculty to work toward individual faculty development goals. The “PFD Academic Pathways” allow participants to attend a few workshops/sessions, work towards one of the “Teaching & Learning Certificates” or put this together comprehensively in the “University Teaching Program (UTP)”.
The PFD continues to develop and deliver essential preclinical and clinical teaching skills programs, such as PBL, Advanced Tutor Training, and Effective Clinical Teaching, but has also undertaken a program of teaching around emerging health sciences educational mandates including:
- Inclusivity
- Inter-professionalism
- Professionalism
- Teaching IMGs
- Narrative Medicine
- Ethics
- Mentorship
Senior level faculty who wish to achieve Scholarship in teaching have formed Communities of Practice (COPs) around these major themes.
We welcome you to our website and sincerely hope that you will find it helpful.
