The MacOrtho residency program would like to congratulate Dr. Rubini Pathy, a current PGY4 resident on winning the International Surgery Desk Scholarship.
Rubini is grateful to the ISD for giving her the opportunity to participate in an elective in October 2012, in the Department of Orthopaedics, Mulago Hospital, Uganda. She will be part of a team of orthopaedic surgeons, residents, nurses and rehab staff from USTOP (Uganda Sustainable Trauma Orthopaedic Program), run by the Department of Orthopaedics, University of British Columbia. During her elective at Mulago Hospital last year in October 2011, Rubini was fascinated by the volume of orthopaedic trauma and recognized that there are multi-faceted challenges to providing optimal orthopaedic trauma care at Mulago Hospital.
The goals of her upcoming elective are to learn about the common orthopaedic trauma presentations and current management at Mulago Hospital and to identify current orthopaedic equipment resources and needs to assist in bioskills workshops for the Ugandan orthopaedic surgery residents, to be run by the USTOP team from UBC and to determine the feasibility of implementing the INORMUS study (burden of orthopaedic trauma) at Mulago Hospital.
Good luck in Uganda and congratulations once again!
