The primary objective of the HEALTH trial is to compare revision surgery rates at 24 months in patients over 50 years of age who are treated with either THA or HA. Secondary objectives include comparing health-related quality of life, functional outcomes, mobility and complications in patients receiving either THA or HA.
HEALTH is an investigator-initiated trial which began as a pilot study funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) in 2008. Since then, enthusiasm and support for the trial have resulted in additional funding obtained by HEALTH American Investigators (National Institutes of Health 2008), Dutch Investigators (ZonMw, 2008) and Norwegian Investigators (Sophie Minde Foundation for Orthopaedic Research 2012). Funding to date has supported the recruitment of 380 patients.
The trial has recently received definitive funding from both CIHR and the NIH which will enable us to include additional sites in the trial to help us reach our recruitment target of 1,434 patients in a timely manner.
