Fellow Spotlight: Dr. Ilyas Aleem

Dr. Ilyas Aleem was born in Ottawa and grew up in Pickering, Ontario. He completed his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the University of Toronto, followed by medical school at McMaster University. This is where he was first introduced to Evidence-Based Orthopaedics and was awarded the CIHR Health Professional Student Research Award for two consecutive years in medical school for recognition of his research with Dr. Bhandari.

Dr. Aleem subsequently completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Toronto, where he developed a strong interest in spine surgery. His research was recognized by numerous peer-reviewed publications, as well as a number of awards including the Peter Armstrong MD Shriners’ Hospitals Award at POSNA, SpineFEST Research Award (for two consecutive years), and the John Provan Award for Undergraduate Surgery Education, among others.

Dr. Aleem is ecstatic to be back in Hamilton this year, where he will be completing a combined research/ clinical fellowship in evidence-based spine care and clinical outcomes under the supervision of Dr. Drew and Dr. Bhandari. He is concurrently enrolled in the Health Research Methodology MSc program at McMaster University, specializing in Clinical Epidemiology and Public Health. Following his time with MacOrtho, Dr. Aleem will be going to Rochester, MN to complete a fellowship in complex spinal reconstruction at the Mayo Clinic.
