Resident Spotlight: James Yan

Published: August 29, 2015

Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Dr. James Yan, grew up on the West Coast and completed his undergraduate degree at the University of British Columbia in Physiology and Commerce. He went on to study medicine at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry in London, Ontario where he became interested in Orthopaedics while engaging in preclinical observerships. James is proud to be welcomed into the MacOrtho team and is excited to begin his next step of training here.

Throughout his undergraduate education and medical school, James has been also an involved community and student leader, dedicating his time in his school in fundraisers and working on the Ontario Medical Students Association Council. He has also been involved in health advocacy, raising the issue of Health Human Resource planning with other medical students to MPPs at Queen's Park and MLAs at Parliament Hill. He feels it is important to continue to press this issue through residency as access to health care, particularly surgical care, is going to be a growing challenge that needs to be faced in the future for the Canadian Healthcare system.

In his personal time, James likes to stay active and enjoy the outdoors by hiking, running, cycling, and kayaking. He also enjoys sports such as rugby, hockey, soccer, and snowboarding.
