Resident Spotlight: Dr. Jeffrey Poon

Published: August 29, 2014

Dr. Jeffrey Poon was born and raised in Calgary, Alberta. From a young age he knew that he wanted to be involved in medicine and broaden his horizons. Subsequently, after graduating from Strathcona-Tweedsmuir high school he entered the direct entry medical program at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland. During his time in Dublin, Jeff was quickly drawn towards orthopaedic surgery.

Upon graduating from medical school he underwent a research fellowship in orthopaedic trauma with Dr. Richard Buckley at the University of Calgary. Topics examined were displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures. His work was presented at the 2013 Orthopaedic Trauma Association’s annual meeting and was considered for the prestigious Edwin G. Bovill Award for most outstanding scientific paper of the year.

Jeff’s love for the elegance and wonder of the operating room is second only to his yearning to improve the lives of patients. He was drawn to McMaster for its outstanding training and leadership in evidence-based orthopaedic research.

“I believe that orthopaedic surgery truly provides solutions for often devastating problems afflicting members of our community. The reduction of both morbidity and mortality of my patients is extremely important to me. It is an absolute privilege to be part of the MacOrtho family,” Jeff said.

Outside of orthopaedics, Jeff has many interests. Sailing, snowboarding, golf and rugby are among his athletic pursuits. He is also a classically trained pianist and violinist.
