Dr. Leon van der Watt grew up in Johannesburg, South Africa. He completed medical school at the University of Pretoria. After medical school, he moved to Port Elizabeth at the southern coast of South Africa to complete a one year internship and one year of community service at Livingstone Hospital, Port Elizabeth. Following his community service, he and a friend toured eastern Africa with motorbikes from Johannesburg to Cairo, Egypt. After this he wanted to see more of the world and decided to come to Canada, where he worked as a Family Physician in Moose Jaw, SK for a year. He then moved to Regina, SK where he worked as a Critical Care Associate for 3 years.
His plan during medical school was always to go into orthopaedics, but it took him a bit longer to finally decide to pursue it. He is very glad that he got the opportunity to start his orthopaedics career here at McMaster. His main interests in orthopaedics include trauma and arthroplasty.
Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife Nicky, mountain biking and skiing.
