Dr. Bhandari Secures Education Research Grant

Published: April 25th, 2014

Dr. BhandariMacOrtho is pleased to announce that Dr. Mohit Bhandari has secured a McMaster Surgical Associates Grant for the development of a treatment decision aid for elderly proximal humerus fracture patients.

This grant will help translate existing proximal humerus fracture knowledge into educational resources that can be utilized for treatment decision making by elderly patients and orthopaedic surgeon knowledge users.

Researchers will create a decision tool that will describe all possible treatment options, list potential complications and their probabilities, and outline expected outcomes. Informative materials such as videos and pamphlets will provide educational information on operative and non-operative treatments, rehabilitation, recovery, and prognosis.

This decision making tool will ensure that the decision making process incorporates patient’s values towards each treatment option, and provide a narrative of “what to expect” from an elderly patient’s perspective.
