MacOrtho recognizes and congratulates one of its long-time friends and mentors, Dr. Freddie H. Fu, orthopaedic surgeon and leader in sports medicine research. Dr. Fu is being honoured for pioneering ACL research and to receive the Dapper Dan Sports Leadership Award in March 2012.

Anterior cruciate ligament surgery has come a long way in a short time, thanks in large part to the work of Freddie H. Fu, who has been at the forefront of the field for nearly three decades.

Dr. Fu has played a major role in revolutionizing how the knee surgery is done, how doctors approach the surgery and how the healing proceeds. His leadership and guidance in this area and his research as a pioneer in ACL surgery have earned him the 2012 Dapper Dan Sports Leadership Award.

At the 76th Annual Dapper Dan Dinner and Sports Auction located at the David L. Lawrence Convention Centre, on March 12, 2012, Dr. Fu gave an impactful speech in receipt of his award:

"We’ve all heard the expression — 'Keep your eye on THE BALL.' It could be a baseball, a soccer ball, or, in the case of Marc-Andre Fleury, a hockey puck. It could be for a cyclist a bike or the road for a runner. In sports medicine we need to keep our eye on THE PATIENT. And, as sports medicine physicians, our top priority is the CARE AND SAFETY OF THE PATIENT. And, as my mentor Dr. Albert Ferguson told us—ALWAYS DO THE RIGHT THING.
