In January 2012, Dr. Clary Foote travelled to Pune, India to present a talk on the International Multicenter Study in Fracture Care (INORMUS) at the Sancheti Institute of Orthopaedics. He attended a talk by Dr. Chitranjan Ranawat, Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Professor at Cornell University.
Dr. Ranawat presented an introspective talk about being a successful orthopaedic surgeon, professional, and parent. His advice stood on four tenets:
1) Find a subspecialty that you really enjoy;
2) Never stop learning. If you are not reading a few hours a week you are not progressing and nurturing your mind;
3) When educating trainees your goal should always be that they will be better than you after you have trained them. That is mentorship;
4) Time management is essential in your personal life. Do not be selfish and partake in activities that your family mutually enjoys.
