Unit 1 structure
Unit 1 : structure

The Unit 1 problems are organized into three subunits:

How We Get Here
This four week block will cover the cellular events of reproduction, embryology to the 28th day of gestation and an introduction to genetics.

How We Stay Here
This block is six weeks long and will focus on selected aspects of homeostasis, injury and repair. The phenomenon of homeostasis will be introduced in the context of the partitioning of body fluids into compartments and regulation of blood pressure and tissue perfusion. We will look at how we know that we have been injured or invaded and how this information is communicated through our bodies. We will look then at two important responses: inflammation and wound healing.

Introduction to Behaviour
This two week period will present a couple of extremely common but challenging behavioural problems: addiction and chronic pain. In the process, you will learn about a biopsychosocial approach to helping people, which will provide a structure for your future examination of health problems.
