Division of Gastroenterology

Welcome to
the Division of Gastroenterology

The Division of Gastroenterology comprises 21 full and part-time faculty members providing care for patients with gastrointestinal disorders in four acute care sites in Hamilton.

The division has clinicians with expertise that includes gastroesophageal reflux

disease, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gastrointestinal diseases, motility disorders, nutrition, advanced endoscopy techniques and hepatology.

There is close relationship between the Division of Gastroenterology and the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute.

This collaborative, multidisciplinary approach has resulted in many

ground breaking studies, and we have an international reputation as one of the top ten research groups in the world.

The Upper Gastrointestinal and Pancreatic Disease Cochrane Review Group also has a base at McMaster to facilitate the synthesis and knowledge translation of primary GI research to patients and clinicians.

Immunophysiology studies immune

reactions on intestinal function.

Immune system cells in the mucosa

of the intestinal tract.

Gut-brain interactions are mediated

via neuro-humeral signals.

Studies examine interactions between

target cells and the immune system.

Research involves clinical trials to

evaluate therapeutic interventions.
