Division of Gastroenterology

Site Director: McMaster University Medical Centre

McMaster University Medical Centre (MUMC) is a 365-bed hospital whose major programs are Digestive Diseases, high-risk Obstetrics and Gynecology and the McMaster Children’s Hospital. MUMC is the lead site for clinical gastroenterology services provided by Hamilton Health Sciences (HHS) and it is the inpatient site for all HHS gastroenterology service patients.

MUMC has a four-room endoscopy unit, where the majority of inpatient and outpatient procedures (upper GI endoscopy, colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and ERCP) are performed, including all HHS colonoscopies for the provincial colorectal cancer screening program (ColonCancerCheck) and a highly-successful, pilot program for nurse-performed flexible sigmoidoscopy.

The 11 gastroenterologists based at MUMC hold their outpatient clinics in the new 2F Digestive Diseases area, co-located with surgeons specializing in digestive diseases and supported by the HHS Home Parenteral Nutrition Team, the Enterostomal Therapy Team and Registered Dietitians specializing in Digestive Health. The GI Investigation Unit at MUMC offers facilities for a wide range of specialized tests including high-resolution esophageal manometry, anorectal manometry with biofeedback therapy, breath hydrogen testing, 13C urea breath testing and wireless capsule endoscopy.

The Division of Gastroenterology at the MUMC site conducts a wide range of clinical research studies in the areas of gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, dyspepia and peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome and constipation, inflammatory bowel disease (ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease), nutrition, gastrointestinal motility and endoscopy. These studies are closely aligned with the basic science research studies performed by the Farncombe Family Digestive Health Research Institute as part of a long-term, translational strategy for coordinated ‘bench-to-bedside’ research.
