Education and Professional Standing

Dr. Chan is the Director (Pediatrics) of the Hemophilia Treatment Centre at the McMaster Children’s Hospital (Hamilton, ON, Canada) and serves as Medical Director in the Coagulation Laboratory in the Department of Pediatric Laboratory Medicine at The Hospital for Sick Children (Toronto, ON, Canada). Dr. Chan is a Career Investigator funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada and a certified member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the Royal College of Pathologists. He is certified as a Pediatrician and Hematologist in Canada and holds a Board Certification in Pediatrics from the American Board of Pediatrics. Dr. Chan is an elected member of the American Pediatric Society and the Society of Pediatric Research. He is also on the Editorial Board for the Thrombosis Research journal.

Recent Career Highlights

Anthony Chan started his research career in 1997 at McMaster University and quickly rose to Full Professorship by 2005. Dr. Chan also obtained a Heart and Stroke Foundation Career Investigator award in 2005, which followed the honour of being recognized with the Canadian Pediatric Society Research Award (2000). Over the last 3 – 5 years, Dr. Chan has studied the generation of thrombin leading to a pending patent (PCT WO2007/073597) and development of assays with commercial partners Diagnostica Stago and Technoclone. Dr. Chan’s primary research involving a covalent antithrombin-heparin (ATH) complex, that has potential to prevent catheter-related thrombosis in children, has engendered many issued patents that resulted in his recent recognition by McMaster with a distinguished innovator award. In the clinical realm, Dr. Chan is continuing to contribute his expertise in thrombosis by providing around-the-clock free consultation world wide through the 1800NOCLOTS service.
