Biography

Ted Warkentin is Professor in the Department of Medicine and the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He is also Regional Director, Transfusion Medicine, of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program and Hematologist, Service of Clinical Hematology, at Hamilton Health Sciences, also in Hamilton.

Dr. Warkentin received both his Bachelor of Science (in Medicine) and his M.D. from the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. He completed a hematology research fellowship at McMaster University (supervisor: Dr. John G. Kelton) and postgraduate work in medicine and hematology at the University of Toronto and McMaster University, respectively.

Dr. Warkentin is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Physicians. He was awarded the XVth Jean Julliard Prize at the XXIVth Congress of the International Society of Blood Transfusion (Makuhari, Japan; in 1996) and was a Research Scholar of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada from 1993 to 1998. Dr Warkentin was for the past four years the Chair of the Platelet Immunology Committee of the Scientific and Standardization Committee (International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis), and is the current Chair of the Chapter that deals with heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, written under the aegis of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP) 8th Conference on Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Therapy.

Additionally, Dr. Warkentin has co-edited 4 editions of the book, Heparin-induced Thrombocytopenia (the 4th edn was published in June 2007), and has published (or in press): 69 book chapters, 170 peer-reviewed articles, and 120 peer-reviewed abstracts. His work has appeared in professional journals such as Blood, The Lancet, the New England Journal of Medicine, American Journal of Medicine, and Annals of Internal Medicine.
