McMaster Objectives: Research

Even though all CanMEDS roles are important, emphasised in this rotation are:

Medical Expert and Scholar

Goal

To develop the necessary knowledge and skills to enable residents to participate effectively in basic and/or clinical research.

Objectives

The resident will achieve the following CanMEDS objectives:

1. Medical Expert

  • To develop a clinically-relevant research question
  • To display the technical skills necessary to perform a research project

 


2. Communicator

  • To communicate effectively and maintain professional relationships with other researchers and healthcare providers
  • To develop oral and written presentation skills to effectively present research results and their clinical implications to the medical community, public and media

 


3. Collaborator

  • To consult effectively with colleagues and other researchers to design the research project

 


4. Manager

  • To participate effectively in a multidisciplinary environment (i.e., research assistants, research nurses, statisticians, other researchers, supervisor)
  • To understand resource issues related to completing a research project
  • To demonstrate an ability to manage research vs. clinical time effectively

 


5. Health Advocate

  • To understand the extent to which for research participants are protected through informed consent and the REB.

 


6. Scholar

  • To understand the process of developing a research question, devising methodology to answer the question of interest, acquiring and analyzing data, and synthesizing the data into appropriate conclusions
  • To demonstrate scholarly productivity (grants, presentations, publications)
  • To display the intellectual ability, work ethic and perseverance to complete a research project
  • To demonstrate the ability to critically appraise and synthesize relevant scientific literature related to the research topic of choice.
  • To understand the process associated with obtaining and maintaining research ethics approval.
  • To become familiar with the appropriate use and interpretation of basic statistical tests
  • To understand the procedures necessary for drafting and submitting a publication to a peer-reviewed journal
  • To appreciate the process for writing a research grant
  • To facilitate the education of patients, house staff/students, and other health professionals

 


7. Professional

  • To show a recognition of limitations and demonstrate ability to seek advice as needed
  • To carry out research in a professional and ethical manner and demonstrate integrity, honesty, responsibility, and compassion
  • To display self-assessment ability
