Specialty Training Requirements

Adult Neurology

Five years of approved residency training. This period must include:

  1. One year of basic clinical training.
  2. a) a minimum of one year of approved residency training in internal medicine (two years are preferable).

Note: Training under Sections 1 and 2(a) combined may include up to six months of neurology.

b) a minimum of three years of approved residency training in neurology, to include

  1. a minimum of 24 months of training in clinical neurology, with at least 18 months adult neurology and 3 months pediatric neurology,
  2. one further year of clinical or basic science research, basic science study, clinical training, or other training directly pertinent to neurology, at a hospital or university centre, acceptable to the residency program committee and the Royal College.

Pediatric Neurology

Five years of approved residency training. This period must include:

  1. One year of basic clinical training.
  2. a) a minimum of one year of approved residency training in pediatrics (two years are preferable).

Note: Training under Sections 1 and 2(a) combined may include up to six months of neurology.

b) a minimum of three years of approved residency training in neurology, to include

  1. a minimum of 24 months of training in clinical neurology, with at least 12 months pediatric neurology and 6 months adult neurology,
  2. one further year of clinical or basic science research, basic science study, clinical training, or other training directly pertinent to neurology, at a hospital or university centre, acceptable to the residency program committee and the Royal College.

OR

  1. The American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) have created a reciprocity program that accepts the credentials of applicants to each other's examinations. To be eligible to sit the RCPSC Neurology examination the applicant must:
  1. Have attained certification by the ABPN in Neurology.
  2. Possess an unrestricted license to practice medicine in one of the United States or province of Canada.
  3. If trained in the United States, the applicant must have completed four years in a Neurology program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and one year of specialty experience.
