Internal Medicine Residency

Academic Half-Day

Each Wednesday, residents leave their clinical duties to attend an afternoon devoted to education. Throughout the three core years, there is a protected weekly Academic Half-Day program. Attendance at the Academic Half-Day sessions is compulsory for all residents in all rotations throughout the three years of training. The Academic Half-Day is generally organized into monthly subspecialty blocks with designated Residents and a Faculty Advisor for each month. Each Resident is expected to participate in the organization of the Half-Day at least one month per year. Faculty are invited to present at the Academic Half-Day in their area of expertise and are expected to provide a resident handout outlining clinical approaches in the context of evidence-based medicine. Core curriculum during Academic Half-Day also includes lecture series in Evidence-Based Medicine.

Attendance

Wednesday afternoon is a protected time for the residents to attend their Half-Day sessions. Therefore, attendance is monitored. Those residents who fall below 90% attendance, will receive an "Unsatisfactory" on their Half-Day Evaluation.

Summer Half-Day

During July and August a summer "acute management series" is scheduled for all first year trainees. There is a separate summer half-day for the senior residents at another location. Attendance is taken at both sessions and is mandatory for all trainees. Both sessions commence at 1330 hrs each Wednesday during July and August.
