St. Joseph's Health Care is fully affiliated with McMaster University and functions as one of four acute care teaching hospitals in Hamilton.

St. Joseph's Health Care runs two acute care sites. The Emergency Department sees 51,000 patients per year. The Urgent Care at the Centre for Ambulatory Services sees 54,000 patients per year. The St. Joseph's Health Care site is the busiest Emergency Department in Hamilton. There are regional programs in Hemodialysis, Transplant, Thoracic Surgery, Toxicology and Respiratory Medicine. St. Joseph's Emergency Department also is the site of the Emergency Psychiatric Assessment Unit.

All patients in Hamilton with psychiatric emergencies are referred through this service and are seen initially by the emergency physicians.

All the emergency physicians who work at St. Joseph's Health Care either have their CCFP(EM) or FRCPC in Emergency Medicine. Residents from both the CCFP(EM) program and FRCP programs rotate through St. Joseph's Hospital. As well residents and medical students and interns from their programs rotate through the St. Joseph's Hospital Emergency Department.

The Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation operates three emergency departments which see a total of nearly 100,000 patients annually. Each site has a focus.

The JHCC Site Emergency Department provides care to the mountain community of Hamilton as well as providing onsite support to the adjacent Juravnski Hospital Cancer Centre.

The Hamilton General Site receives the largest number of ambulances and serves as both the Regional Trauma and Cardiac centres.

McMaster University Medical Centre site provides a unique combination of care to children and women. The Sexual Assault Treatment Program is also located at the MUMC site. As well, the HHSC is the Base Hospital for Emergency Medical Services in the city of Hamilton and much of the surrounding region.

There are residents from both the RCPS and CCFP Emergency Medicine programs rotating through the sites at all times, plus residents and learners from a number of other disciplines.
