Adult Nephrology Residency Training Program

Introduction

Dr. Azim GangjiThe McMaster University Postgraduate Nephrology Residency Program is recognized for its exceptional clinical training program that stresses a strong foundation in the clinical and basic sciences as well as emphasizes practical and procedural training. The program is the largest renal centre in Canada and is therefore able to provide a broad experience in all aspects of nephrology practice including chronic kidney disease, general nephrology and transplantation (inpatient and outpatient), glomerulonephritis, thrombotic disorders of the kidney and dialysis. In ensuring a breadth of exposure is provided to all trainees, the program provides an opportunity to train in both academic and community settings.

Resident Centred Program

The McMaster University Postgraduate Nephrology Residency Program prides itself in being a resident focused and resident centred program and therefore there is a strong emphasis on competency based education provided in the form of protected and graded academic half days, retreats, simulation training and a comprehensive curriculum emphasizing the knowledge, skills and attitude required to become a proficient nephrologist. The Division of Nephrology faculty are committed to nephrology residency training and the Division has been recognized for providing an outstanding educational experience to residents by the Department of Medicine.

Fellowship Programs

After completion of the 24 month Nephrology Residency Program, individuals can pursue fellowship training in numerous areas of nephrology including the McMaster University Renal Transplant Fellowship Program which is one of the few programs in Canada that is an AST certified program, Home Dialysis Program and Glomerulonephritis Fellowship. In addition, McMaster University has the world renowned Health Research Methodology Program which provides training in pursuing clinical research. For those wishing to pursue the clinician educator path, the University provides an opportunity to pursue a Masters in Health Sciences Education. A strong basic science fellowship program in Nephrology is also available.
