Division of Nephrology
Admission Process
Applicants for subspecialties are selected through a ranking process by a Selection Committee which meets after resident interviews are completed. The Nephrology Program typically accepts two to three new trainees each year, although the number of residency positions available varies from year to year. In recent years the program has had between one and four PGY-4 year trainees. The deadline for receipt of applications is September 1st.
Residents who are eligible for Ontario Ministry of Health Funded training can obtain information on the application process for our program by visiting the CaRMS Website.
Residents can be considered for training in Nephrology at McMaster University if they have completed at least three years of training in an approved Internal Medicine Residency Training Program. Information regarding licensure requirements are available at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario website.
Application Supporting Documentation Required:
- Curriculum vitae
- A minimum of three reference letters are required. One of these letters must be from the Internal Medicine Program Director. All referees must also complete the Assessment of Applicant Grading Form Assessment of Applicant Grading Form and include it with their letter of support. Letters of reference not accompanied by the Assessment of Applicant Grading Form will be discarded.
- Proof of citizenship MUST be submitted with each application since only
Canadian Citizens, Permanent residents or Landed Immigrants can apply
to CaRMS positions in Ontario. One of the following documents must
be submitted:
- Canadian birth certificate
- Permanent Resident card (both sides of the card)
- Record of Landing, clearly showing the date of landing
- Passport page showing Canadian citizenship

Admission Process: International Medical Graduates (Government Sponsored)
All other residents (residents who went to non-Canadian Medical schools, including those who trained in the US) should contact the Postgraduate Medical Education Office at McMaster University prior to contacting the program director. Additional eligibility information is available at the Ontario College of Physicians website.
All applicants to the Nephrology Training program should complete the Postgrad Application Form. Please ensure that all referees complete the Assessment of Applicant Grading Form and include this form with their written letter of support. All reference letters should be forwarded directly to the Program Director or included in sealed envelopes with the application package.
