PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre

McMaster School of Nursing has been recognized as a Pan-American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) Collaborating Centre.

Focused in primary health care (PHC) nursing and health human resources, the Centre works collaboratively with faculty internally at McMaster across various disciplines, and with institutions in the Nursing and Midwifery Global Network.

McMaster is among the 42 PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centres targeted specifically in areas within nursing and midwifery. In 2011, the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centre in PHC nursing and health human resources was re-designated.

Goals & Activities

These are the terms of reference/goals with specific activities for the term of 2011-2015. Our aim is to work with PAHO/WHO to:

1. Analyze the nursing workforce to inform health human resources and health services policies

  • Workforce Integration of Internationally Educated Nurses
  • Organizational and Occupational Working Conditions for Nurses Across Six Countries
  • Health Workforce Profiling Tool
  • Measuring PHF in Canada – Emphasis on Human Resources for Health
  • Orientation and Mentorship to support new graduate nurse transition into the profession


2. Strengthen nursing education to contribute to the development of PHC integrated services

  • Developing and Sustaining a Collaborative Primary Care Team
  • Exploring Perspectives of Primary Care Practitioners for Development of a Primary Care Team
  • Primary Health Care Nursing: Enhancing Collaboration between Primary Care and Public Health
  • Community of Practice Network in Nursing and Midwifery
  • The role of Mentorship and Preceptorship in Primary Care Settings
  • Best Practices in Nursing Education Curriculum Based on PHC
  • Best Practices in Nursing Education Curriculum Based on PHC for Indigenous Populations in Canada


3. Develop and disseminate knowledge related to nursing human resources and interprofessional collaboration to address workforce needs

  • Evaluation of a Knowledge Exchange Intervention in a University and Community Partnership: A Pilot Study
