Department Chair Changeover
Dr Murray Potter assumed the role of Acting Chair effective July 1, 2017. Dr Potter is currently a Professor in the Department
of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and has held the roles of Associate Chair, Education and Department Education Coordinator.
Dr Mark Crowther resigned his position as Chair of the Department on June 30, 2017.
Dr Crowther held the position of Chair since October 2014.

New Faculty Appointments
Dr Stacey Ritz joined McMaster on September 1, 2015 to take up the position of Assistant Dean, BHSc Program. At the same time, Stacey was apointed to an Associate Professor position within our department.
Dr Jack Gauldie,DistinguishedUniversityProfessor,Professor Emeritus, and Past Chair of our Department has been named new Vice President, Research Institute at St Joseph's HealthcareHamilton. Jack will bring an extensive career of scientific investigation to this role, specifically exploring the body’s immune responses to disease. His primary area of focus, molecular manipulation for the treatment of diseases including cancer, arthritis and chronic lung diseases, has earned him international recognition as a leading expert in the field of gene therapeutics. His commitment to patient driven research, geared to improving quality of life, aligns with the goals of St Joe’s Research Institute, making him the ideal candidate to advance the organization’s mandate. Department Chair Changeover
Dr Mark Crowther assumed the role of Chair effective October 1, 2014. Dr. Crowther joined McMaster in 1999 and is currently a Professor in the Department of Pathology and Molecular Medicine and the Department of Medicine and also has an Associate Membership in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Dr Crowther is the Vice President of Research at St Joseph's Healthcare System and Chief of the Hamilton Regional Laboratory Medicine Program.
Dr Fiona Smaill resigned her position as Chair of the Department on September 30, 2014. Dr Smaill held the position of Chair for two terms (ten years) and in that time has earned the respect and admiration of her faculty and the University as a whole

2014 - Hallie Groves
passed away quietly in her sleep at home in Ancaster, Ontario on April 30th, 2014. Hallie was the wife of department Emeritus Professor, David Groves. Hallie was born on July 31, 1943 in Penticton BC. After enrolling in UBC, she was trained as a Medical Laboratory Technologist at BCIT, working in the laboratories of St. Paul and the Vancouver General, in research laboratories at UBC, and as a teacher at BCIT. She completed her BSc at UBC. After working as a technologist in support of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at McMaster Health Sciences Center, she obtained her MSc and PhD in Biomedical Sciences at McMaster, researching animal models of cardiovascular disease. She retired in 2007 as Associate Professor after helping many local physicians, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and nurses gain a better functional understanding of anatomy, wellness and disease. She was a strong believer in the McMaster model of active learning. In retirement she led an active life involving sailing, gardening, woodworking, embroidery and her grandchildren. In keeping with her love of teaching and anatomy, it was Hallie's wish that she continue to help students through bequeathal of her body to a University education program.
2013 - Alun Wynn-Williams ... passed away peacefully, on Nov 3, 2013, in his 93rd year, in Dunedin, New Zealand. Dr Wynn-Williams, a native of New Zeland, was hired in 1970 as a Professor of Pathology and Director of the Clinical Teaching Unit at the Hamilton General Hospital. While Alun retired in 1985 as Professor Emeritus, he remained an honorary staff member with Hamilton Health Sciences until 1998.
2013 - Dr Dharam Singal ... passed away on July 17, 2013 at Joseph Brant Hospital surrounded by family and friends. Dr. Singal was born on December 5, 1934 in India and moved from India to the US. He obtained a BSc (Hons) University of Delhi, India (1952), MSc University of Delhi, India (1957), PhD (Zoology) University of Delhi, India (1962), and PhD (Genetics) Washington State University, USA. He received the Distinguished Scientist Award from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and United Nations Development Programme in 1993. Dr Singal joined our department in 1970 as a lecturer in Pathology and Molecular
Medicine and retired with Emeritus Professor in 1999.
He was a scientist with HRLMP,
and was the first to run the HLA lab looking after flow Cytometry and tissue typing.
Dr Gerard Simon ... passed away on Monday January 21st at the age of 82. Gerard came to Pathology in 1979 from the Banting Institute in Toronto to establish a strong clinical Electron Microscopy Facility for Laboratory Medicine. He was well respected as a leader and teacher. He became director of Anatomical Pathology during his time here. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1995. Gerard was also the founding member of the Microscopical Society of Canada. That society currently offers two awards named in his honour. Gerard was also chair of a world congress in EM held in Toronto in 1978. When not engaging in his academic career, he enjoyed painting and sketching. Gerard is survived by his wife Suzanne and two children.
Erwin Regoeczi ...
Dr Regoeczi, Professor Emeritus, past Director of the Cardiovascular Hemostasis and Thromboembolism Research Program and past Chair of the Health Sciences Graduate Programs died at the age of 81 on December 16, 2011.
Memorial donations are welcomed by the family to the Erwin Rogoeczi Prize in Pathology and Molecular Medicine by sending a cheque payable to McMaster University.

Together they will focus on three main areas of research that address issues of HIV patient care at various stages - patient needs from diagnosis and before initiation of antiretroviral therapy (ART), patient needs after ART initiation including toxicity and clinical management, the increasing disease burden of aging with HIV, and determinants of efficacy related to ART.

... appointed as a part-time member of the Death Investigation Oversight Council. The DIOC is an independent body committed to serving Ontario by ensuring that death investigation services are provided in a manner that is effective and accountable. DIOC was established as an independent advisory agency in order to provide oversight of coroners and forensic pathologists in Ontario. This includes administering a public complaints process. Specifically, the council provides advice and makes recommendations to the Chief Coroner and the Chief Forensic Pathologist on matters that include financial resource management; strategic planning; quality assurance, performance measures and accountability mechanisms; compliance with the Coroners Act; and the administration of a public complaints process.

Dr. Alexopoulou's role will include: Regional enagement of stakeholders to create a pathology community of practice; Active participation in the Provincial Laboratory Medicine and Pathology Committee (PLMP); with PLMP, developing and implementing evidence-based pathology standards, guidelines, and quality indicators; and liaising with community pathology leads to ensure achievement of quality reporting standards.
