Division of General Pediatrics
About General Pediatrics
The Division of General Pediatric is the largest division within the Department of Pediatrics. The division consists of 20 pediatricians, four of whom are part-time. The pediatricians provide consulting services at McMaster Children's Hospital and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton. All pediatricians are affiliated with McMaster University.
General pediatricians work in four teams, one at St. Joseph's and three at McMaster. The three teams at McMaster cover the 12 Level II neonatal patients, between 30-40 ward inpatients, many of whom are chronic complex, all the Emergency Department consult requests, as well as consult requests from the regional hospitals and regional community physicians.
At St. Joseph's Healthcare, we are responsible for up to 18 Level II patients, the Pediatric Short Stay Unit, attend deliveries, consult requests from the Emergency Department as well as from regional hospitals and regional physicians.
The Division of General Pediatrics provides 24/7 on-call coverage at both hospitals. In addition to on-service and on-call work in these hospitals, our group has a commitment to the medical needs of the community. All the General Pediatricians provide follow up and consulting services to children within Hamilton and the surrounding regions. Care provided is based on the best available evidence in a family-centred environment.
Members of the Division of General Pediatrics have subspecialty training, expertise and interests in a wide variety of pediatric activities, including; adolescent medicine, law, neonatology, tropical medicine, international health, HIV, child welfare, research and epidemiology, education, pediatric intensive care, and management of chronic complex mechanically dependent children. The division is actively supported in these activities by various sub-specialists, dedicated nurse practitioners, dieticians, therapists, nurses, and multiple other health care providers, as well as community supports, especially from the family physicians, and other pediatricians, with whom our group works in close collaboration.
General Pediatricians are actively involved in education and spend considerable time teaching pediatric residents, other residents training in pediatrics as well as teaching in the clerkship and undergraduate medical education programs. Their contributions are consistently recognized with a variety of awards. They also take part in the Pediatric Resident examinations, with a couple of them being Royal College Examiners.
In addition, the Division now has a research component and many projects are on the go. The group is also actively involved in community services, with many contributing their time towards public service by way of voluntary work internationally and, as well, within the community, both clinical and educational.
