  • July 2017: Daily News interviewed Rebecca Crawford, an Indigenous Undergraduate Summer Research Program scholar (IUSRS), who was supervised by Dr. M. Constantine Samaan over the summer. You can read the article here.
  • March 2016: Undergraduate student, Aaron DeJesus, supervised by Dr. M. Constantine Samaan, launched The Kiducate Project, an animated video series for children about healthy living. (Watch the video/s on the website).
  • 2016: Dr. M. Constantine Samaan (principal investigator) has been awarded a CIHR meeting grant ($10,000) for the project entitled, "Creating a coalition to understand the role of inflammation in pediatric scoliosis."

  • 2015: Drs. M. Constantine Samaan, Katherine Morrison and their colleagues obtained CIHR funding ($176,322 per year for 5 years) for the study entitled, "An assessment of psychological factors, inflammatory biomarkers and kidney complications; the improving renal Complications in Adolescents with type 2 diabetes through REsearch (ICARE) cohort stody."

  • 2015: Ishan Aditya received CIHR summer studentship award for his project entitled: The effect of Telmisartan on muscle inflammation in the metabolic syndrome: A pilot study. This project will focus on studying the anti-inflammatory effects of Telmisartan, a drug used for the treatment of high blood pressure, so that it may be used to treat multiple conditions associated with the metabolic syndrome.

  • 2015: Kuan-Wen (Katherine) Wang, a Masters student under Dr. Samaan’s supervision was awarded Ontario Graduate Scholarship to study the link between nutrition and childhood cancer in the CanDECIDE study.

  • March 19, 2015: Dr. Samaan Spoke to CBC about a recent research from the Samaan lab on a protein that may explain how women maintain insulin sensitivity despite having more fat in the body. This study also received coverage in Science Daily, Diabetes.co.uk, and others.

  • January 19, 2012: Dr. Samaan wrote an article in the Hamilton Spectator entitled: "Explaining the weight gain-diabetes connection in kids."

 

Past events

June, 2016: Dr. Samaan was an invited speaker at the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology Academic Rounds, First Department Of Pediatrics, University of Athens, Greece. The title of the presentation was: Obesity in survivors of childhood brain tumours: what we know, what we need to know.

October, 2015: Dr. Samaan was an invited speaker at the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology Rounds, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
He delivered a presentation entitled: Immune-metabolic crosstalk in obesity and diabetes: A translational view.

October, 2015: Dr. Samaan was an invited speaker at the Division of Pediatric Endocrinology Journal Club, University of Cape Town, South Africa.
He delivered a presentation of a recently published paper by the research group, highlighting the set up of a specialized interdisciplinary program for children and youth with type 2 diabetes at McMaster Children’s Hospital, Hamilton, Ontario.

October 2015: Dr. Samaan and Dr. Adam Fleming (Pediatric Neuro-oncology, McMaster Children’s Hospital) and colleagues had a poster chosen for e-poster presentation at the International Society for Pediatric Oncology meeting, Cape Town, South Africa. The poster entitled 'The Effectiveness of Lifestyle Intervention, Pharmacotherapy, or Bariatric Surgery on Lowering BMI z-score in Obese Survivors of Childhood Brain Tumors: A Systematic Review

September 2015: Dr. Samaan was invited to make a presentation at the McMaster Department of Family Medicine Rounds. His presentation entitled: 'Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Adolescents' covered the epidemiology, mec Hamitic and management aspects of type 2 diabetes.

May 2, 2015: Dr. Samaan led a workshop entitled: ‘Type 2 Diabetes in Children and Adolescents: A Translational View’ at the Canadian Obesity Summit in Toronto. This is a collaborative effort between physicians and  scientists to address the rising rates of childhood type 2 diabetes.


March 4, 2015: Dr. Samaan hosted the event entitled: ‘Childhood Obesity and Type 2 Diabetes Workshop: translating knowledge into action’. This event featured talks from experts in quality of life and mental health.


Ocotber 2013: Dr. Samaan delivered a presentation at the McMaster Demystifying Medicine seminar series in collaboration with Dr. Jonathan Schertzer, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences Program and Pediatrics.
