Departmental Program Director

Appointment

The Program Director is selected jointly by the Chair of the Department and Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Education to be approved by the Postgraduate Education Committee and forwarded to the Health Sciences Education Committee for approval.

The term of office is three or five years renewable with review. This renewal is at the discretion of the Departmental Chair and the Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Education. Any new Departmental Chair or new Postgraduate Education Dean may review the functioning of incumbent Program Directors.


Accountability

The Program Director as a member of the Postgraduate Education Committee is the faculty member responsible for the implementation of assigned Health Sciences postgraduate residency education policies and postgraduate education for his/her area of program responsibility.

The Program Director is responsible both to the appropriate Departmental Chair and to the Assistant Dean of Postgraduate Education for the implementation and quality of the departmental postgraduate program and for coordination of corporate policies and educational programs with respect to the university, university departments, the hospitals, and the qualifying bodies such as the Ontario College of Physicians and Surgeons, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and the College of Family Physicians.


Responsibility

It is the responsibility of the subspecialty Program Directors to be accountable to and represented by the departmental Program Director. In those programs with subspecialties the departmental Program Director shall establish a mechanism that will allow the subspecialty Program Director to be actively involved in issues of general interest and concern in departmental residency education.

The departmental Program Director is responsible for the overall conduct of the integrated program and to assist him/her there must be a Residency Program Committee. (See the terms of reference for the R.P.C.)
