Tim Whelan


Dr. Tim Whelan
is currently the Director of the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit. He holds a Canada Research Chair in breast cancer research. He is also Co-Chair of the Breast Disease Site Group for the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) Clinical Trials Group and he practices as a Radiation Oncologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre.

Dr. Whelan obtained his medical degree at Oxford University Medical School and was a recipient of the Rhodes Scholarship and Terry Fox Fellowship for Physician Scientists.

In 2000, Dr. Whelan was the first recipient of the NCIC W.E. Rawls Award, given to investigators undertaking studies, which have lead to new advances in cancer control research. Since obtaining his master's in CE&B, he has been actively involved in research focusing on health services research and clinical trials in oncology for the management of breast cancer. One of his main areas of interest is research transfer and physician-patient decision-making. He is currently principal investigator on several projects evaluating the use of treatment decision aids for women with breast cancer.

J Sussman


Dr. Jonathan Sussman
is the Associate Director of the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit.  He practices as a Radiation Oncologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre with special interest in breast cancer and hematological malignancies.

Dr. Sussman obtained his medical degree at the University of Toronto and worked as a family physician prior to pursuing further training in Radiation Oncology.  He was the recipient of a Cancer Care Ontario fellowship in 1999 during which time he became affiliated with the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit.  He has completed his MSc in the Health Research Methodology programme at McMaster University.

Currently Dr. Sussman is actively involved as an investigator in studies evaluating systems of supportive cancer care.  He is also interested in the relationships between tertiary and primary care in the cancer continuum.

Peter Ellis


Dr. Peter Ellis
is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Clinical Epidemiology & Biostatistics at McMaster University.  He is also a staff medical oncologist at the Juravinski Cancer Centre (JCC) and an investigator with the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit.  He obtained his medical degree at the University of Sydney. 

Dr. Ellis is trained in internal medicine and medical oncology, and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. He completed a Masters of Medicine (Clinical Epidemiology) and a Doctor of Philosophy also at the University of Sydney, moving to Canada in October 2000. 

Dr. Ellis is the Chair of the HRCC Lung Disease Site Team, an Executive Member of the National Cancer Institute of Canada (NCIC) Clinical Trials Group Lung Disease Site Committee, and is a member of Cancer Care Ontario’s Practice Guideline Initiative, Provincial Lung Disease Site Group.  He is also an investigator on several NCIC and pharmaceutical industry-sponsored multicentre phase III clinical trials in breast and lung cancer.  Dr. Ellis has a research interest in the role of the consumer in decision-making, and is an investigator in several studies in this area. He is also co-Principal Investigator in a systematic review examining diffusion and dissemination of cancer control interventions.

Kevin Brazil


Dr. Kevin Brazil
is the Director of the St. Joseph's Health System Research Network.  He holds a faculty appointment as Professor in the Department of Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics and Division of Palliative Care Department of Family Medicine, McMaster University, and is an investigator with the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit.

Dr. Brazil is a member of the R. Samuel McLaughlin Centre for Research and Education on Aging and Health.  He also was co-chair for the Interdisciplinary Health and Aging Program, Faculty of Health Sciences, McMaster University (1998-1999). He has held a Canadian Institutes of Health Research/Ontario Ministry of Health, Investigator Award.

His research interests include health services research, health care for the older adult, end of life care and evidence-based practice in long-term care.

Melissa Brouwers


Dr. Melissa Brouwers
is an Associate Professor and Head, Health Services Research in the Department of Oncology, McMaster University; the Provincial Director of the Program in Evidence-based Care, Cancer Care Ontario and the Project Lead for the Capacity Enhancement Project of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer Corporation.  She holds a B.Sc. in Psychology from the University of Toronto and an MA and PhD in Psychology from the University of Western Ontario. 

In addition to her work with the PEBC and the CEP, Dr. Brouwers holds an additional $4.7M in funding from CIHR as a principal investigator and co-investigator.Of particular note, she has been a world leader in advancing the gold standard of guideline development, reporting and appraisal as the Principal Investigator of the CIHR-supported international research team the AGREE Next Steps Consortium (see www. agreetrust.com). Just completing two randomized controlled trials and additional studies, Dr. Brouwers and the Consortium released AGREE 2.0, the new international standard, in Spring 2009. 

She is a member of the Clinical Guidelines (CG) Action Group of the Canadian Partnership Against Cancer Corporation (CPACC), and the former Lead of the Health Technology Utilization Guidelines of Ontario (Health TUGO). She is also a member of the KT-ICEBeRG team and McMaster University’s Collaboration for Health KT Stream.  Dr. Brouwers holds several peer review funded grants both as a principal investigator and co-investigator. She is also a new investigator with the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit.

Dr. Brouwers primary research interests include the development, dissemination, implementation and evaluation of evidence-based decisions products such as clinical practice guidelines, standards, and quality indicators, models of decision-making, and knowledge translation and/or brokering. Her teaching interests include research methods, behaviour sciences and social sciences.

Denise Bryant-Lukosius


Dr. Denise Bryant-Lukosius
joined the School of Nursing in 1995 as Assistant Clinical Professor and founding Chair of the Adult Oncology Nursing Program. She is presently an Assistant Professor with the School and senior researcher for the CHSRF/CIHR Chair in Advanced Practice Nursing (APN). She is also a Clinical Nurse Specialist with a practice focused on the care of men with advanced prostate cancer at the Juravinski Cancer Centre. She is a new investigator with the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit.

Dr. Bryant-Lukosius has a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) from McMaster University, a Master of Science in Community Health Nursing and Education from D’Youville College, and a Doctor of Philosophy from McMaster University.

Her primary areas of interest include: evidence-based practice, development and evaluation of APN roles, and supportive cancer care. Denise is currently the Chair of the Oncology APN Nursing Community of Practice for Cancer Care Ontario, Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee for the ICN International Nurse Practitioner/APN Conference and a member of the Curriculum Advisory Committee for the Ontario Primary Health Care Nurse Practitioner Program.

Hsien Seow


Dr.
Hsien Seow has been appointed McMaster’s Cancer Care Ontario Health Services Research Chair in the Department of Oncology effective July 1, 2009. He holds a faculty appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncology, McMaster University, and is a new investigator with the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit.

Dr. Seow earned a BS from Yale University in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology. He has a PhD in Health Policy and Management from the Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, concentrating in health services research. Previously, he worked as a research assistant at RAND Health, with the Center for Palliative Care Studies. At RAND, he led health services research, local and national quality improvement collaborative and advocacy initiatives.

His research interests involve improving quality and the healthcare service delivery of palliative care for cancer patients and other serious, chronic illnesses.

Cathy Charles


Dr. Cathy Charles
is a member of the Centre for Health Economics & Policy Analysis, an associate member of the Department of Sociology and an investigator in the Supportive Cancer Care Research Unit. 

Dr. Charles received her BA and MA degrees in Sociology at the University of Toronto and her PhD in Socio-Medical Sciences from Columbia University.

Dr. Charles's research interests at McMaster University include: public and patient participation in health care decision-making, shared decision-making between physicians and patients, the use of research information to improve the organization and delivery of health care, the health professions and public policy, and the social construction of meanings in health policy analysis.  With colleagues at McMaster, she is currently undertaking a study funded by the Canadian Breast Cancer Research Initiative on shared treatment decision-making among women with early stage breast cancer and among physicians who specialize in this area.

Dr. Charles's teaching interests are in Medical Sociology, Health Policy Analysis and Qualitative Research Methods.  She has been a health policy consultant to several Canadian provincial governments as well as the federal government on a variety of health care issues.
