Marilyn Ford-Gilboe RN, PhD, is an Associate Professor, School of Nursing, University of Western Ontario. She has conducted extensive research on health promotion and capacities of single-parent families led by women, including those with a history of woman abuse. Using a feminist orientation and a range of quantitative and qualitative methods, she is currently completing interrelated CIHR-funded projects that focus on: 1) generating a theoretical explanation of health promotion processes of single mothers and their children after leaving abusive partners/fathers and 2) the impact on these processes of public policy in five domains (custody and access, housing, early child development, child counseling, income support) and the services that are linked to such policy. She is evolving more critical approaches to investigate the long-term health impact of abuse on women’s mental and physical health after leaving, as well as developing a supportive primary health care intervention for women and children who have left abusive partners/fathers. Dr. Ford-Gilboe will provide expertise regarding both the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the research.
