Depression in Women by M. Steiner and K.
Yonkers (London: Martin Dunitz, 1998), 89
pgs.
This book offers a concise summary of female-specific
mood disorders including premenstrual syndromes,
mood disorders associated with childbearing
and perimenopausal depression. Emphasis
is placed on treatment and prevention of
these conditions.
Depression in Women is a small pocketbook
which could serve as a quick resource for
clinicians. One of the strengths of the
book is that both biologic and psychosocial
issues are considered in discussing assessment
and prevention. In addition, treatment options
include pharmacotherapies as well as potentially
useful low-risk therapies such as lifestyle
modifications and use of vitamins. Current
research findings are used to support the
diagnostic criteria and treatment recommendations
throughout the book. There is an extensive
reference list of over 250 citations, most
of which have been published in the last
5 years.
The Women's Health Office has a copy of
this book for those who might like to peruse
and assess it for themselves.
