Healthy Kids Community Challenge Evaluation

The Healthy Kids Community Challenge is a province-wide program hoping to increase healthy weights and promote healthy behaviours for children and youth. Hamilton was selected as one of 45 communities to participate in the Challenge. The Child Health and Exercise Medicine Program is conducting an evaluation of the Challenge in Hamilton. Through this research project we will learn about how the community and environment impacts children's health behaviours, such as physical activity, nutrition, sleep, and active transportation.

What does the study involve?

For this project, we will visit schools in Hamilton five times: Spring 2018, Fall 2018, Spring 2019, Fall 2019 and Spring 2020. This will help us learn about children's health as they grow.

At each timepoint, the following happens:

  • Children complete a survey at school about what foods they eat and what activities they like to do.
  • We measure standing height, sitting height, and weight.
  • We email parents an online survey about their community and their child's nutrition, physical activity, and sleep.

Who is eligible to participate?

We are inviting children attending Grades 5 & 6 in Hamilton schools and their parents to participate. Children can participate whether or not they took part in activities put on by the Healthy Kids Community Challenge.
